Parents:
“I want more piercings but my parents won't let me.”

Hey Terra,

Should I be able to pierce my ears one more time even if I have two already? I'm 15 and this is something I want and I think if I work to pay for it, I should be able to do it because it's my body, isn't it? My parents are against this but they haven't really said why. So what would you do if you were me?

Wanting More

Dear Wanting More,

Yes, it's your body and I admire that you are willing to work for what you want. But since you're still a teen, I'm not surprised that your parents have something to say about more piercings. They may be concerned about:

  1. health issues relating to the piercings
  2. the reactions you might get from other people now and in the future
My suggestion is that you talk to them (calmly and respectfully) about what you want to do. And LISTEN to what they have to say. If they aren't comfortable with it, then I suggest strongly that you NOT sneak behind their backs and do it anyway. That could definitely cause a lot of unnecessary problems (tension, conflict, breakdown in trust) between you and your parents.

OK?

In friendship,

Annie
