Annie (AKA Hey Terra!) has been around long enough to have experienced a lot of what Life can dish out. But, it hasn’t been so long that she's forgotten what it's like to be your age. Check out some of the thousands of email questions teens from around the world have sent to Terra. You may learn something useful from her answers:
Bullying:
“People are making fun of me.”
Hey Terra,
People are making fun of me saying: pig, gorilla, fat and uni-brow. It makes me feel really bad and and I don't know what to do. I tried talking to the teachers but they still do it. What should I do?Thanks,
Tired of being made fun of
Dear Tired of being made fun of,
Wow, that's so rude and insensitive it makes me angry just to think about people treating you that way!
What you're describing is harassment. And it's against the law. Every student has the right (by law) to go to school without fear of being teased or harassed. If you've talked to your teachers and you get no support, then your parents need to step in and help you out here.
Your parents need to get in touch with the school principal as soon as possible. He or she needs to know what is going on and your parents need assurances that it will STOP.
Can you talk to your parents about this? (and get them to back you up with a phone call and/or a meeting with the principal?)
Here's a very powerful interview from my website about teasing.
I think you'll be able to relate to what these kids have to say.
If your parents don't get the seriousness of what's being done to you at school, please let them read this email. It's their job to keep you safe and if they work with the school and make sure the school is doing its job too, then you will see the changes you want and deserve. But you have to take the next step and talk to your parents.
Please keep me posted.
I care about you.
In friendship,
Terra
